Kindergarten Registration Has Ended

Our kindergarten registration period is over for this year. If you are new to Champaign or have questions about our kindergarten assignment process, please watch this helpful video and then contact the Family Information Center at (217) 351-3701 with any questions.

Learn what you need to know to make the right choice for your child. Review. Rank. Request.

Review - Before You Start

The Champaign Unit 4 Schools of Controlled Choice (SCC) plan gives parents of all students the opportunity to apply for admission to a variety of elementary and middle schools. The District recognizes that choosing a school is an important decision, and there are many factors to consider.

Controlled Choice:

  • Eliminates the need to continually redraw boundaries due to changes in housing patterns
  • Offers parents and students stability in their school assignment
  • Promotes school improvement in all schools
  • Reduces the need for involuntary busing
  • Promotes diversity in all schools
  • Allows the district to optimize class size at each building

How to participate

Research the school that's best for you and your child. Consider the proximity and the waiting list when researching.

During the registration period, parents need to download the application form and drop it off at Family Information Center.

  • Parents of incoming kindergarten students will need to select five school choices.
  • Parents of students who wish to request a transfer will follow the same steps during the transfer period.

After you register, you'll need to wait a bit to see how the assignment process plays out. While we'd love to guarantee your applied for school is the one your child will attend, we cannot.

Things to consider

Rank - Things to Consider

Before you register, here are some things you want to keep in mind. If you have any questions about these, or need assistance, feel free to contact us.

All applications received during the application period, regardless of date, will be processed equally.

The likelihood your child will be assigned to your school of choice is dependant on several factors. Those factors include:

Proximity Priority

Students who live close to a certain elementary school have "proximity" priority in the Schools of Controlled Choice process. Proximity does not apply to middle school registration.

  • Proximity A is defined as when students live within a 1.5 mile radius walking distance to a school.
  • Proximity B is defined as the closest school to the student’s home by bus if there is no school within 1.5 miles of the home.
  • Students have an A or B Proximity status, but not both. Proximity applies only to the first choice school in the selection process.

Sibling Priority

Students who have a sibling attending a school are given a priority if that same school is chosen as a first preference. Priorities are considered within the guidelines of balancing socioeconomic status and seat capacity.

After siblings are assigned, the remaining seats will be filled based on the 82% Proximity A and 18% Proximity B. Controlled Choice guidelines and special program needs are also considered.

Transportation

Transportation will be provided for students living more than 1.5 miles from their school assignment. In addition, the District provides transportation for students living closer than 1.5 miles if IDOT confirmed hazardous walking conditions exist between home and school.

The Waiting List

Families who do not receive their first choice school will be placed on a waiting list for that school. The waiting list expires annually, so families must reapply during the transfer period.
